How to Make the Most of the Holidays

Winter break—a time of much needed relaxation, revitalization, and reunion.

But, more importantly, it’s a time to travel over the duration of three to five weeks without school.

When you’re on a budget, it may seem like there are a million limitations but there are also a million possibilities.

Turns out, adventure is closer (and cheaper) than you think.

From California to Virginia, there are countless budget-friendly holiday destinations as many cities, big and small, all over the United States offer huge deals in their off-seasons.

For me as winter break approaches, Washington D.C. has become my top choice for holiday travel.

Not to mention that it’s a destination to check off of any traveller’s bucket list as the capital of the U.S. and home of the president; it’s also a place that appeals to everyone, both national and international, as it provides both historical and entertaining venues.

And, as a huge bonus for college students and anyone on a budget, Washington D.C. is known as the “capital of free,” according to its website.

If you plan your trip right, travel, lodging and food could be your only expenses over the duration of your stay—all of which can be as low as a couple hundred dollars if planned enough in advance.

Some popular holiday festivities include the following:

  • The National Christmas Tree ceremony that often features performances from popular entertainers, or the National Menorah ceremony that celebrates Chanukah traditions.

  • Festive displays all around the city, including those at Union Station (pictured above), downtown Washington, D.C., and Georgetown.

  • MUSEUMS. Ranging from the arts to outer space decked out in holiday décor.

These are just a few of many that D.C. offers to celebrate the holidays and any potential travelers can explore their holiday event website for even more great opportunities.

A trip to D.C. is cheap at the right time of year, something to cross off your bucket list, and can be really entertaining if you know where to go.

I know I will.
